We almost never know when we are experiencing something for the last time
The last dinner in a house before moving away.
An ordinary conversation with someone before the relationship changes.
The last time we do something that seemed like it would always be part of our life.
And the strange thing is that, in that moment, nothing extraordinary happens.
There is no sign saying:
“Pay attention. This is ending.”
It simply happens.
Only later do we look back and realise that the moment that seemed like just another one was important.
Perhaps we expect important moments to feel important.
But often they do not.
They are an ordinary afternoon.
A familiar journey.
A table.
A conversation.
Light coming through a window.
A person who is still part of our everyday life.
And perhaps living with a little more awareness has something to do with something as simple as stopping every now and then and thinking:
“This is my life right now.”
Without judging it.
Without trying to improve it.
Without wondering what comes next.
Simply seeing it.
Because ten years from now, we may miss things that today we do not even realise are important.
Perhaps that is why details matter so much.
Because often we only understand their value once they have already become a memory.
Paying attention is also a way of living.
